Established as a borough in 1890, Pennington is an independent municipality surrounded by Hopewell Township. Originally a village in the Hopewell Township, Pennington was agriculturally based. As the farmers’ needs increased, so did the village introducing blacksmiths, general stores, mills, schools, churches, wheelwrights and taverns. In 1842, Mercer County and Hunterdon County split. By 1875, the community was boasting a population of approximately 750, multiple general stores, dry goods stores, tailor shops, grocery stores, confectionery stores as well as a hardware store and a drug store. Additional growth came about the last quarter of the century making it clear that Pennington had differing needs than the surrounding areas, thereby leading to its separation in 1890. Notable residents have included Peter Benchley best known for writing the novel and film “Jaws,” Bob Bradley, the current head coach of the United States men's national soccer team and Val Ackerman, the original president of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), having served from 1996 to 2005.
