Originally a Dutch farming community, Montgomery is home to 22,000 residents and counting. Established in 1702, the rich soil and gentle sloping land of Montgomery made it ideal for subsistence farming for early settlers. The township itself includes several smaller hamlets: Skillman, Belle Mead and Rocky Hill. Although farming has largely given way to suburban neighborhoods, residents still find serenity in the fresh air of Montgomery. Montgomery offers both a charming, pastoral setting and a thriving intellectual community to its residents. Montgomery is also home to such companies as Johnson & Johnson as well as Bloomberg.
If you're looking to get to the Jersey Shore you'll be pleased to know Long Beach Island, Belmar, Atlantic City and others are an easy commute away.

For cinema lovers, Montgomery residents don’t have to travel far for foreign films: tucked away in the Montgomery Shopping Center, Montgomery Cinemas plays independent flicks on six screens, seven days a week. Parks and Recreation
For many residents, the green acres of Montgomery provide a welcome escape. Throughout the year, residents head for lush woods of the Sourland Mountains. Formed long ago when molten rock pushed through shale, the resulting wilderness attracts mountain bikers, hikers and nature lovers. The Ridge Trail located in the Sourland Mountain Preserve is five miles long; it is open to hikers but much loved by mountain bikers for its big mossy boulders and technical sections. Given the rolling landscape around Sourland Ridge, it’s no wonder tournament level golf courses abound in the Montgomery area. Notably, the Cherry Valley Country Club in Skillman features a course designed by the award winning architect Rees Jones.
Montgomery Township is the fastest growing community in Somerset County. Although suburban development has nearly blurred the lines between the township of Montgomery and the nearby communities, residents of Montgomery united to slow down suburban growth in 2010. In 2007 the township purchased a 256 acre parcel of land in the Sylvan Lake area with plans to develop a town square. However, recently the community voted to turn the land into a county park, favoring open spaces to further development. Around 88% of Montgomery residences are occupied by local owners.
Saddle up! Montgomery has a large equine population. Residents enjoy wonderful scenery of Montgomery from horseback. It's not uncommon for Montgomery real estate owners to also own horses here.
